Is Linux Cheaper on the Desktop Than Windows?
No, this isn't another rant about how you should convert to Linux because it's free, although it is free. Free is a four-letter word among those who scoff at the mere mention of Linux. Silverlight, via Moonlight, comes to Linux
If you're like me, you don't like proprietary video and audio codecs. Be that as it may, some sites, like NBC's Olympics site, use Microsoft's proprietary Silverlight streaming technology. Until recently, if you were using Linux that meant you couldn't watch videos from these sites at all. Until now.

I'll create a series (don't even know the number of items in the series) where I share with my loyal readers (in mathematical terms, that's an empty set) some handy tricks I've found when working with bash. Probably some of the tricks won't be the most efficient way to carry something out... but I can attest that, at the very least, they do work.

I hadn't thought about it for a while, but given the recent Conficker outbreak, I got to rethink of the whole thing again. Now.... there was something that bothered me A LOT.... and it still does (though I'm not working with them anymore, I still feel like I'm a part of the family). They are still developing applications in-house using proprietary frameworks tied to Windows.

For years now, there's been talk brewing about the concept of Green IT. Pundits have predicted in years past that sustainable IT would be job one soon, really soon...So where does open source software fit into the mix? How green is the GPL? Pretty green, if you ask me. In fact, companies that already use open source software are well on the way to greening their IT departments.

Linux has no domino effect.
Way back when I was a wire jerker and learning about electronics there was explained to me a phenomenon called the domino effect. This means that when one part of an electronic component fails, the surrounding parts also fail. Just like a row of falling domino's, hence the name. The same thing can also happen in software.
