On my first day of my new position as civil liberties director at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals dealt my previous employer, the Stanford Center for Internet and Society, a fantastic victory. The court's ruling in Golan v. Gonzales is also a triumph for the First Amendment and for the overwhelming majority of creators.

In the next seven days, both Microsoft's European Union and United States antitrust cases will reach critical junctures. A routine U.S. hearing tomorrow will likely be anything but routine. Elsewhere, an appeals court will issue a ruling on the validity of Microsoft's adverse antitrust case in Europe.

Moonlight only from Novell

So there you have it. You can only get Microsoft technologies when you get them from Microsoft, or from Microsoft proxies (Novell).

Inside PDF: Fast Tracking
Jim King, Adobes PDF Architect, has a blog entry up that compares the standardization efforts of PDF (through ISO) and OOXML. It's a very informative look at what makes a worthwhile standard, and well worth reading, especially in the aftermath of OOXML. Given the number of PDFs in the world, it's also a topic we should be aware of.

Patent lawsuit a lose-lose for NetApp, Sun
Law suits sparked by patent infringement claims are risky ventures. They hardly ever make either party look good, and they are anything but sure bets as revenue producers - unless you're an attorney. Therefore, when they do happen, those involved usually go out of their way to keep all but the essential facts of the case from public view.

Advice on relicensing from the SFLC
After the past week's kerfuffle w/ the BSD folks regarding the copyright notices in ath5k, the SFLC thought it was important to provide some educational outreach to the Linux kernel development community.
