After the new login screen, new themes and the new boot splash theme introduced the other day, Canonical finally updated the old Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) wallpaper with a brand new one.

Ubuntu keeps promising a completely new theme in every release, but it has been delayed time and time again. The wait is over, though, since the artwork in Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope daily builds is rapidly being refreshed.

Pushed into the Jaunty repository this morning for Ubuntu 9.04 was a new theme for USplash. This Canonical project for providing a splash screen at boot-up on Ubuntu is being replaced by Plymouth.

In 2007 as one of our first Linux distro reviews, we took a peak at PcLinuxOS 2007 (aka PCLOS) and found it at the time to be a stellar product for it's time, stable, clean, easy to use and enjoyable. Will 2009 still retain it's former glory, or has the new version ended up as a fizzling dud?

After the new themes introduced yesterday, Canonical decided to update the boot splash screen (USplash) theme with a very nice one. As you can see in the image below, the logo is the same as it was in Ubuntu 8.10, but it's smaller and the loading bar was replaced with a thinner and nicer one (see the images below for more details).

These days most distributions are very easy to use and (for better or worse) abstract away the complex and powerful system underneath. This makes it easier to use but as a result, users often know little about the underlying system. Today we are going to take a look at Logical Volume Management (LVM), which gives users the ability to re-size partitions on the fly.
