Lately I have been quite busy with many different (usually sabayon-related) things. A main focus is trying to come up with a a nice theme for 5.0. For the mean time however I have created some artwork for the CoreCD, which I have dubbed “Sabayon.Core”.

Ubuntu Netbook Remix - An Acid Test
At the end of last week I got the opportunity to start an "Acid Test" of the latest Ubuntu Netbook Remix. One of my neighbors had seen my HP Mini-Note, and said that she thought something like that would be good for her.

Opera 10 Beta - Preview & Screenshots
The last time I had a look at Opera 10 it was in alpha state, meaning no new features were introduced, and only the rendering engine was replaced with a newer one compared to 9.x series. This first Opera 10 beta comes with various new features.

The debate over whether to replace the cross-platform Pidgin IM client with Gnome's own Empathy IM client has been raging since Empathy was included in Gnome (Ubuntu 8.04, Hardy). It's that time in the Karmic release cycle, and the debate begins anew.

Easily run Windows apps on Linux with CrossOver Linux 8
I was running Windows, and before it came along, MS-DOS, applications on Unix and Linux for ages. It was never especially easy, but experts could do it. With CodeWeavers' latest CrossOver Linux 8, though, it's become so easy that anyone should be able to do it.

Red Hat's Fedora 11: So easy you'll forget it's Linux
Red Hat has taken heat over the past few years for allegedly neglecting the personal computer in favor of more profitable enterprise servers. It's a fair critique: Red Hat is an enterprise software company, a decision it made years ago, and to good effect.

The incredible, expandable Linux netbook
My Acer A1 netbook that I purchased three months ago has already had four operating systems installed and run on it — it shipped with Windows XP, then it had Ubuntu Netbook Remix 8.04, then I upgraded to UNR 9.10, then I went back to UNR 8.04. Oh and I burned an image of Moblin OS onto USB and took that for a test drive, too.

Mandriva 2009 Spring: Quick review
When it comes to the big distros I tend to stick to the ones that are based on Debian. Apt just is simpler and faster to me than rpm. But since I reviewed Fedora 11 (or tried to, in any case), I thought I’d have a go at the other big two RPM distributions: OpenSuse and Mandriva.

Tip: Make VLC Quit After Viewing Video/Audio
What this does is create a playlist. The first item is the file you want to play, and the second item is "vlc://quit," which, rather obviously, is a command to tell VLC to quit. The effect is that as soon as your media stops playing, VLC exits.

Linux Hardware Support Better than Windows?
You know, the old thing about Linux was that it didn't necessarily support your (new) hardware. Greg Kroah-Hartman has been trying to bust that myth with the Linux Driver Project for a while now. But recent events have proved beyond doubt that not only is he right, but installing and using new devices on Linux is now much easier than on
