Over the past couple of weeks I've been involved in a college class on how to write a research report. It's certainly not the easiest class, but it's been informative. Being a geek myself, I chose for my research topic, the ever volatile subject of "The best ways to market Linux" (I'll share the research report when I'm done with it).

This quarter was all about constructing the fireworks of the future for Linux vendor Red Hat (NYSE: RHT). You don't see much happening at the moment, but all the ingredients for a massive eruption are there.

Will Bill Gates’ departure usher in open source friendly era at Microsoft?
Will Microsoft become more open to open source with the departure of Bill Gates? It’s a tough call. Observers from both the open and closed source worlds say the exit of Microsoft’s longtime leader won’t usher in a GPL era at the company but it will likely accelerate what is already a changing attitude in Redmond.

IT leaders urged to contribute code to open-source projects
Open source is no longer a novelty, even within the largest corporations. Today, 53% of businesses use open-source software, according to a recent CIO.com survey. However, not enough of those businesses are contributing code back to the open-source community, said Jim Whitehurst, president and CEO of Red Hat, at the Red Hat Summit.

In an interview with Builder AU Sun’s chief open source officer, Simon Phipps, admits that Sun “screwed up” regarding open source. (The picture is of Phipps speaking in Bangalore from the official Sun FOSS.IN blog.) But he isolates the “screw-up” to 2001-2002, when Sun was still a proprietary company.

The vocabulary of open source development models
James Dixon has given the thumbs-up to my stretching his Bee Keeper analogy to explain open source development models (which is nice) and in doing so has suggested a new term to help quickly explain the difference between vendor- and community- dominated development projects.

Sun: We screwed up on open source
Many open source developers remain sceptical of Sun because their memories of the company focus on Sun's interactions with the community in 2001/2002, which Sun's chief open source officer Simon Phipps concedes was a period where Sun "screwed up".

Applying the Bee Keeper model beyond captive open source projects
I’ve been reading The Bee Keeper (also here in PDF), an explanation of the relationship between professional open source software (POSS) vendors and their communities, written by Pentaho’s CTO James Dixon. It is a very elegant explanation of the development/business model employed by the POSS vendors such as MySQL, Pentaho, JBoss and Alfresco.
