Based on its specs, plenty, if you consider that Tabeo is designed for kids ages 5 and up. For one, it has a few features that Google did not even consider for the Nexus 7. The “few features” I am referring to are an HDMI port and a microSD slot.

The task this book sets out to do is impossible and many who purchase the book will expect a great deal more. Everyone wants a one volume answer guide to the Ubuntu Desktop, it simply is not possible. The goal of the current book, is to provide “jumping-off point to get started.”

And also unlike the graphical installer of Ubuntu 12.10 beta 1, that of Kubuntu 12.10 beta 1 does not yet have preliminary support for LVM, the Linux Logical Volume Manager, and full disk encryption, and there is no indication that those features will even make it into the installer by late October when the final stable version is released.

Full disk encryption and LVM configuration in Ubuntu’s graphical installer showed that two very important features that were missing in Ubiquity, the installation program of Ubuntu Desktop, will finally be incorporated into the version that will ship in Ubuntu 12.10.

Ubuntu and Canonical have come a long way since their 7.04 Feisty Fawn release, which followed Microsoft’s Windows Vista. Back then, Canonical failed to capitalise on Vista’s universal rejection by its users. But it's now 2012, and things are different.

Well, it looks like from Ubuntu 12.10, due in late October, Ubiquity will have support for full disk encryption and LVM. The test build that I installed in a virtual machine shows that the implementation is still in the early stages, but it also shows how easy it will be to configure both features when the final release hits the digital shelves.

With an open source project like OI, contributors come and go all the time, but Alasdair’s reasons for quitting paint a very dark picture for the future of the project, certainly not a good advertisement for OI. From his email of resignation Alasdair sees the project as worthless and as good as dead, writing that:

The alpha version of what will become ROSA Desktop 2012 has been made available for download. It comes about a week later than planned, but that is no big deal. The most important thing is that it is here. Let the bug hunting begin!
