Microsoft Cuts Off Access To Old Documents

http://www.fanaticattack.com

What happened and why open formats matter! Tucked in with the many security updates (and the restoration of one’s ability to paste text from a web page into a Word document!), a very interesting modification to the Office 2003 software waits quietly for installation with Service Pack 3. These events with Office 2003 should act as a cautionary tale of proprietary product, vendor, and platform lock-in.

Save Your Computer Before Windows Crashes

http://www.fanaticattack.com

You’ve heard it before, back up your hard drive. And kind of like the adult voices in Peanuts comics strips, you tend to tune out the droning noise and attend to more pressing matters, like getting stuff done and making deadlines. Before you know it, you have a full year of important work, photos, files on your hard drive and it’s still not backed-up. Time creeps along, and suddenly BAM, you’re staring into a blue blank screen and find yourself repeating over and over, “I shoulda, woulda, coulda.” To get life again, you even re-install Windows, but it still won’t reboot.

Does anybody care about Mr. Gates’s visit in Paris?

http://standardsandfreedom.net

"I think this is a question worth asking. Although this links to an article in French, you’ll probably get the idea: Bill Gates is visiting my beautiful city, Paris, just like many other well-known figures the U.S have brought to the world, such as Britney Spears, Georges W. Bush and Mr Potato. The major difference with them is that Bill Gates did not have to avoid mobs of curious people or fans (although I think Mr Potato managed to spend some time pretty much anonymously ).

Bill Gates Invades the Land of Linus, Uses Dumping Techniques

http://boycottnovell.com

One of the most FOSS-friendly countries in the world, where Firefox boasts a market share of almost 50%, has just heard about a little visit involving Mr. Gates himself. As I’ve argued for about a year, his retirement will involve a great deal of lobbying, which makes it not truly a retirement per se but more of a role change.

Copyright Extensions and ISP Filtering: Breaking EU Culture, One Amendment at a Time

http://www.eff.org

"As you may recall, the European Parliament's forthcoming report on the Cultural Industries has become the latest target of lobbying by the recording industry. First, they attempted to insert language that advocated that European ISPs filter and block their own users on the basis of suspected infringement. As we explained to European Members of Parliament..."
