Yesterday I presented on 'Open Sourcing Education in South Africa' at the Ubuntu Live conference in Portland. The main idea was to start making links between that Shuttleworth Foundation and the Ubuntu community. I also wanted to test out some language from the Foundation's emerging theory of change. Some quick learnings:

In-fighting within the open source community needs to stop or risk further alienating companies, attendees at the Cape IT Initiative's (CITI) FOSS event heard last week.

But the real big question on my mind, as the proprietor of a new start-up IT company, will Gentoo Linux have a future or will another fork of Gentoo, such as Sabayon Linux assume the role to provide support for a possible Gentoo-based Enterprise Server? Financially, many of us would pay for support services from Daniel Robbins.

Mozilla CEO Mitchell Baker has admitted that Thunderbird is to be booted out of the Mozilla camp in order to allow “the Thunderbird community to determine its own destiny” apparently.

There has been some interpretation of my Thunderbird /mail post as saying that Thunderbird doesn't fit into the mission of the Mozilla Foundation. This is not my view at all.

when I loaded the live CD six months ago, it was more a case of having a couple of hours to kill. Anyway, I was surprised to find that everything worked…just like that. The more I fooled around with it, the more it intrigued me. I was able to do a lot of stuff without having to do a lot of searching and fixing.
