Recently, the Linux Foundation has apparently been pointing out that the struggling US economy may cause businesses that are looking to cut cost to switch to Linux. I completely agree, but there is potentially even more to it than just the struggling economy.

Interesting times we live in
It's also possible that in economically hard times people may become much more conservative and stick with what they know, which usually means MS software, for fear that change may incur further costs.
It will be interesting to see to what extent the recession can help GNU/Linux gain popularity. Logic suggests that expensive proprietary software will suffer and that free alternatives will thrive. Also if unemployment rises you could have lots of programmers with time on their hands, and working on a high profile FOSS project is a good way to boost your CV and keep your skills up to date whilst waiting for the economic cycle to turn.
