Venezuela and the Hackers’ Revolution

http://www.dailyradical.org

"The Third International Forum on Free Knowledge was recently held in Maracaibo, Venezuela, bringing together many people interested in the development of free software worldwide. One reason Venezuela chose to host this event is that, in January 2006, their new free software law came into effect, which mandates that all government agencies migrate to free software over a two-year period.

Interview: How a hacker became a freedom fighter

http://www.newscientist.com

"One of the founding fathers of "free software" and an esteemed elder of the hacking community, Richard Stallman has made defending people's freedoms his life's work. That usually means supplying hackers with software and attacking copyright law.

Why are hardware manufcaturers keeping specs to themselves?

http://blog.sp.or.at

"Just think about it for a moment. About 20 years ago you got specifications for pretty much every piece of hardware you bought. You were given exact instructions on how to use the hardware you just bought, not only how to install it. Things have changed since then.

Is Ubuntu becoming the generic Linux distro?

http://blogs.zdnet.com

Over the past year or so I’ve noticed an increasing number of newbies (a term which I use affectionately) interested in taking Linux for a spin - for example, the number or emails I’m getting on the subject from zero a year ago to several dozen a week. The reasons for their interest in Linux are many and varied, as is the level of commitment to making the switch from Windows or Mac.

SliTaz GNU/Linux, the Smallest “Desktop” Distro Ever Created

http://www.junauza.com

" «At 25 MB, it has to be the smallest desktop distro ever created». These were the words of Ladislav Bodnar in the most recent issue of Distrowatch Weekly when he announced this fresh and minuscule distribution as a new addition to the waiting list. Its name is SliTaz, and I was so intrigued about it that I tried it out..." -- See also: http://www.e-linux.it/news_detail.php?id=4767

It’s official: Microsoft’s concerned about GNU/Linux

http://larrythefreesoftwareguy.wordpress.com

"Without fanfare (as expected), Microsoft filed its 10-K form to the Security and Exchange Commission. In it, however, we find that Microsoft bemoans the fact that their “business model,” well, might tend to suck..."

I’ve seen the light: GNU/Linux Does Not Matter That Much

http://gustavonarea.net

"We freedomware advocates think that switching to a Freedom-respectful operating system (usually GNU/Linux) is the most important step when switching to freedomware, and therefore we focus on promoting these systems (myself included). However, I’ve found out that it does not matter that much.

"Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) is shipping and what we know so far is that it is incapable of running on many types of machines. In fact, Microsoft is being sued for putting stickers all over machines claiming that Vista could run on them, when in fact, it cannot.

Linux on a Macintosh

http://www.tuxation.com

Since Apple introduced the Intel chip in their Macintosh computers, people have been using this technology to run other software that they would normally run on their PCs, such as Windows or various blends of *nix. Because of their specialized hardware, Macs present somewhat of a challenge to get a PC operating system that would run without a hitch on a normal PC computer, running on an Intel Mac. This guide aims to highlight, avoid and deal with main complications that arise when running (or trying to run) Linux on a Macintosh.

GNU/Linux World Domination for the Wrong Reasons

http://itmanagement.earthweb.com

"Whenever I hear people discussing GNU/Linux's prospects for becoming more popular, I'm reminded of a comment by Tommy Douglas, the social democrat who became a hero for introducing universal health care into Canada. If he could press a button and gain a million voters who did not understand his policies, he said, then he would not press that button. He meant that he was not in politics simply to be elected, but to gain supporters for his ideals -- and that he was determined not to lose sight of his long term goals while pursing short term ones.

Do Linux Users Care About Freedom?

http://www.bytesfree.org

Over at the TuxToday blog, there’s a post about Linux users not caring about freedom - because they’d rather just use Adobe’s Flash plugin in lieu of Free Software like Gnash. Or they think Richard Stallman and the FSF are morons who are hurting the Open Source movement. I’m torn by this argument, because I can see both sides of this.
