Penguin as logo/mascot for Linux was discussed first in early 1996 by several people in the linux-kernel mailing list. The idea of such mascot came from Alan Cox first. Among many other suggestions made by different people there were parodies of other operating system logos, sharks or even eagles.

In the beginning, sometime in early 1996, several people were talking on the linux-kernel mailing list about a suitable logo/mascot for Linux. Of the many, many suggestions, many involved parodies of other operating system logo's - or were strong, noble beasts such as Sharks or Eagles.

Increasingly we're seeing big business jump on the Linux bandwagon, as companies wake up to the money that can be made out of a community of developers working for free.

Linus Torvalds, the creator of the open-source Linux kernel, was once mauled by a very small penguin while on a trip in Australia. The experience had a lasting impact on him and later inspired him to make a penguin the official Linux mascot.

People just can't get enough of Tux, the world-renowned penguin mascot of Linux. I'm saying this because my collection of "30 Coolest and Funniest Tux Icons" has already received a mind-blowing number of hits in just a short period of time.

Tux is the offical mascot of the Linux kernel and is a widely known symbol among the Linux and free software community. He is short, fat, and has yellow duck-like flippers and a beak. He was designed by Larry Ewing based on a suggestion by Alan Cox and he was named by James Hughes. He represents no known penguin, but he most looks the most like a little/fairy penguin.

Once Linux gets enough market share for it to make sense for hackers to start hitting Linux hard, then viruses attempts will start coming. We must remember that where there’s a will there’s a way and that way will probably be found. Viruses, spy-ware, rootkits, etc are big money and people will do anything for that money.
