Exaile is a music player aiming to be similar to KDE’s Amarok, but for GTK+ and written in Python. It incorporates many of the cool things from Amarok (and other media players) like automatic fetching of album art, handling of large libraries, lyrics fetching, artist/album information via Wikipedia, Last.fm submission support, and optional iPod support via a plugin.

Amarok is a popular audio player under Linux. It can manage external storage devices, transfer music to your iPod, display lyrics, and play various formats. Although Amarok supports scripts to extend its functionality, not many users know about the powerful features that these simple plugins can provide.

A year and a half ago, the excellent Linux music player Amarok added extensive support for Magnatune. The programmer, Nikolaj Hald Nielsen, did this on his own initiative, simply because he thought it'd be a neat thing for his favorite music player to have, and because he liked Magnatune's business philosophy.

After reviewing Amarok, a great music player, I’m going to talk today about Rhythmbox. Rhythmbox is the default music player for Ubuntu, so it deserves a little review. I recently installed Ubuntu on a new Laptop and this time, instead of installing Amarok, I gave a little try to Rhythmbox

For a time, GNU/Linux music library tools seemed to be, well, non-existent. Sure, XMMS was an awesome media player. But if you wanted to catalog your music, you were out of luck. Apple users had iTunes and were always rubbing it into the free software world's face. Even Microsoft, the sleeping Redmond giant, had upgraded Windows Media Player to include a library feature.

The Amarok team has proudly announced a few hours ago the second beta release of the upcoming Amarok 2.0 music player. The much-anticipated release brings lots of improvements, new features and numerous bug fixes.

The most important changes in Amarok 2.0 Beta 2 are:

Amarok is a popular free audio player based on the K Desktop Environment. Right now, it's available only under Linux and other varieties of Unix, although the Windows version is to be released soon.

When it comes to playing music in Linux, Amarok is one of the best audio players out there. It offers almost everything you need, from a clean, intuitive interface to a range of useful scripts. You can even put it on a server and give it a Web interface.

At the end of May, Mark Kretschmann, the lead developer of Amarok, gave us a little surprise by adding integrated support for playing music videos within the Amarok window. The video looks perfectly integrated thanks to Plasma, and now you can manage you music videos along with your music collection, and not as a separate tab/section.
