This happened on Friday, where my very loyal PCLinuxOS system had finally shown its age. Constant desktop freezes/crashes and the signs of slowing down prompted me to go distro-hopping again, searching for a new distro which can work flawlessly on my laptop...just like Morpheus going looking for Neo all over again :-p

PCLinuxOS is another rising star in the Linux constellation. Based on Mandriva, PCLinuxOS aims to be a simple distribution that reaches to the masses, allowing Windows users to easily and painlessly convert.

I've been a full-fledged Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon user for more than a week now, I'm completely off Microsoft Windows and I couldn't be happier. For some reason, however, I keep getting emails and posts urging me to try other supposedly superior Linux distributions for newbies - PCLinuxOS and SimplyMEPIS, among others. Intrigued, I have decided to check this out for myself.

"In my usual "Linux hopping" travels from distro to distro, I sometimes stretch outside the Ubuntu family of distros. Recently, I have gone between PCLinuxOS to Fedora, and then back to Ubuntu. These are my notes from using both, and my comparison to Ubuntu 7.04."

The last time I looked at PCLinuxOS was version 0.92, which according to DistroWatch was about 3 years ago. I was asked to take a look at it again, so here I go.

Today we'll be looking at SAM Linux 2007 test-1, a Linux distribution (also called a distro) from Germany. It is based on PCLinuxOS, featuring the Xfce4 window manager.
SAM Linux is a very ambitious undertaking, and one of those odd distros that falls somewhere in the middle of being a lightweight distro for slower machines, and a full-featured one for upscale computers.

I have set myself a target of 1 month without booting to windows.
A little history --
1) I use Windows 2003 at Office.
2) I have tried many Linux distributions including Arch, Gentoo, Ubuntu and openSUSE and now have the perfect windows replacement at home -- PCLinuxOS.

This past weekend, I used one of our old desktop computers to install a copy of PCLinuxOS 2007. I took this updated system over to my parents house for them to try out as an alternative to their aging Windows XP system (I was about ready to re-load the OS on this one.)
