The default image viewer for KDE 4, Gwenview, has received quite some love from developers. The interface has change a lot, making it less cluttered, and some new little features have been added. Read on for more information and lots of screenshots.

Ever since I first fired up KDE on openSuSE, I’ve been in love. The KDE interface just swept me off my feet. But there’s always been one nagging thing. Firefox and Thunderbird stick out like two sore thumbs. They don’t look like KDE apps (see figure 1 and figure 4), they don’t work with KDE programs (like KPrinter), and they just don’t feel like they belong in KDE.

I know it is not so nice to complain and bash a project when you don't contribute to it. And yes until now, I did not contributed to the KDE4 desktop as I wished. I compiled it regularly and used the libraries, but did not run the KDE4 desktop or KDE4 version of the applications except KDevelop and Quanta.

Yesterday, we began looking at the top 10 hottest open source apps today, as judged by their level of activity on SourceForge. We talked about what these apps do and just why they matter.

In KDE4 they have changed the KControlCenter and named it System Settings. I found it to be easy to navigate and very intuitive. Lets start the visual review

We love GNOME. Sometime around 2.6 it started becoming really, really damned good, and a lot faster and more responsive. All kinds of nice things like Network Manager, the Nautilus CD burner and the SFTP support popped up. It helps that most major Linux apps like like Firefox, Evolution, GAIM, and OpenOffice use the same toolkit and themes too.

I have this huge love/hate relationship with Firefox. It’s way too bloated and so much slower compared to the other browsers I’ve tried. But I can’t live without it, simply because I never found a decent alternative. but I don’t like running Gnome apps in my KDE install. That’s why I was quite excited when I found Arora, a WebKit-powered Qt web browser.

With 4.0's release, the technology of KDE4 isn't the only thing we find ourselves at the starting line of. As many of you have probably noticed, a theme for our KDE4 promotion campaigns was also unveiled using the slogan "Be Free".
