Anoop presented the vision behind the Freedom Walk and offered Free Software as a viable solution for the technical needs and offered help from the Free Software community inexploring possible technical opportunities. The dean was impressed with the concept and he requested for workshops on Free Software and possibly on Free Software GIS software also.

Critical mass in Kasargod for a FSUG

Even though there is no FSUG as such there in Kasargod district, there is a strong support base in this district for the cause of software freedom. Kasaragod was on of the five centers of ITEC (Information Technology Education Center) of Kannur University, where the course of MSc in Computer Science with syllabus fully based on Free Software was offered. Those courses were started in 2001. The student of ITECs in Kannur University has registered a society named SEPSIT (Social Entrepreneurship Promotion Society on Information Technology, Kannur in 2001) for the promotion of Free Software entrepreneurship in the region. That society was very active for two years with more than 100 active associates. They have started installing GNU/Linux in High schools and trained the teachers even before IT@School is proposed to start.

The computer distributed to high schools in 2002 under a scheme of MP fund (of Abdullakutty) were installed with GNU/Linux with the help of SEPSIT. Thus the message of freedom is reached around 50 high schools spread over Kasaragod, Kannur and Wayand district through this scheme.

The Vivaravicharam magazine, IT @ school project, and local free software based business group such as S2S2, activities of local KSSP members etc. have further strengthened the base of free software movement in this region.

The freedom walk will surely further strengthen the software freedom messages in this region. I extend full support for the freedom walk and will join the walk.

Wish all the best for freedom walk.
