Anybody up to writing good directory software?
Tue, 2007-02-20 11:17 — David JonathanSince the very beginning, directories (of any kind) have had a very central role in the internet. (I have recently grown fond of Free Web Directory. Even Slashdot can be considered a directory: a collection of great news and invaluable user-generated comments. As far as software is concerned, doing a quick search on Google about software directories will return the free (as in freedom) software directories like Savannah, SourceForge, Freshmeat and so on, followed by shareware and freeware sites such as FileBuzz, PCWin Download Center and All Freeware (great if you're looking for shareware and freeware, but definitely less comprehensive than their free-as-in-freedom counterparts).
Is better education the key to finding better software?
Sat, 2007-03-03 03:25 — Edward RusselI read David Jonathon's article Anybody Up To Writing Good Directory Software? the other day, which got me thinking about software directories in general. As David mentioned, many of the software directories one finds when doing a quick google search are free as in beer, not as in freedom. But what interests me is the software directories that already exist, providing a combination of both free as in beer software, and open source software. Sites such as Freeware Downloads and Shareware Download don't advertise themselves as providing free as in liberty software, but each of them have a good selection of open source software available... if you know where to look.

Linusux "article"
I don't know why so many BSD fans seem to be so keen (and jealous?) to want to mock Linux in every way, whether based on facts or imagination and blind hatred only? I like both operating systems, and understand that both have pros and cons. I recommend that people try to avoid useless and totally childish black-and-white polarization between them.
Anyway, the "article" in question is of really lousy quality, contains mostly just offensive language and stupid cliches and simplifications, but not much analytical content of any sorts. I guess that is enough for many BSD fan boys to vote it up, huh?
A cleaned up version is in the works? Gee, that sounds promising... But why not wait publishing till you really have something worth publishing instead of naive and offensive hate propaganda? Grow up, please, if you want to be taken seriously at all.

I think the term you're
I think the term you're looking for is sardonic humour. I believe the BSD proponents that act in the manner you described are confused about certain aspects of their derision; they blur some facts together and fail to understand others.
For example, this person has the mentality of convenience above everything else. People like this are not aware of the fact that our systems are free, which means they have the liberty to tinker with our system as much as they wish. Instead of commissioning resources to improve their own software situation, they would rather choose the system that is currently the most convenient and moan about the inadequate alternatives. This is the mentality of those conditioned to expect convenience and helplessness.

Huh?
Why is this so popular? Even those who loathe Linux couldn't put an upvote against this nonsense?

FreeBSD is not something I
FreeBSD is not something I would recommend as the Ports system contains endorsements to install proprietary software. If not for this problem, FreeBSD would be a good recommendation as a free desktop system.

It's not an article, it's a screed.
I bet a lot of BSD users are embarrassed by this kind of uninformed negativity.
There are a couple of wry laughs to be had but it may be a bad idea to encourage such ass-hattery by recommending it.
