Since the free, online Wikipedia user-created encyclopedia began in 2001, the Linux-based IT infrastructure behind it has been expanded and lassoed together to keep up with the demands of the popular Web site.

In what it calls "an unprecedented decision" by the community, the non-profit organisation confirmed that it will blackout the English version of the Wikipedia online encyclopedia for 24 hours on Wednesday 18 January 2012 from 05:00 GMT.

The Wikimedia Foundation has received another major donation. Today Google announced that it is donating two million dollars to the non-profit organisation behind Wikipedia.
