The MPAA created the "University Toolkit", a modified version of Xubuntu Linux for universities. However, they made no effort to rebrand it and the site (http://universitytoolkit.org/) does not provide any link to download the sources. Is the MPAA violating copyright and Canonical's trademark (http://www.canonical.com/legal)?

You get some positive news, such as the Amicus brief filed by the EFF and others in the Jammie Thomas case, which could net her a new trial. But also on Friday, the MPAA filed its own brief, one which basically says it feels evidence isn't necessary in the case of one of its copyright infringement trials.

ESR writes about the perception of technologists on MPAA backed legislation such as SOPA/PIPA/ACTA. He tries to make it as clear as possible technologists will not have it. The internet and our computers will remain uncensored.

The MPAA has successfully shut down an entire town's municipal WiFi because a single user was found to be downloading a copyrighted movie.

How do you destroy the GPL? Honestly I don't think it will be done, but there is a way. Simply put the GPL is a copyright license, which is it's strength and it's achillies heel. For years publishing companies, our friends at the RIAA and MPAA among others have pushed for longer and longer copyright terms so that they can reap the rewards from other people's work for a longer period of time. So why not turn things on their heads a bit? Actually, what I'm talking about has already been proposed.

It was unfortunately reported yesterday by a number of sources that Amazon had released the source code for the software running on the Kindle DX.
This isn’t all of the Kindle source code. It’s a selection released in order to comply with the license requirements of the code originally written by other people (like the GNU Project) which Amazon modified for its own purposes.

RMS: Companies that develop free software and release it under the GNU GPL sometimes distribute some copies of the code in other ways. If they distribute the exact same code under a different license to certain users that pay for this, typically permitting including the code in proprietary programs, we call it "selling exceptions".
