The Public Domain Manifesto has its heart in the right place as it objects to some of the unjust extensions of copyright power, so Richard Stallman wish he could support it. However, it falls far short of what is needed.

Richard Stallman (RMS) founded the GNU Project in 1984, the Free Software Foundation in 1985, and remains one of the most important and outspoken advocates for software freedom. RMS now spends much of his time fighting excessive extension of copyright laws, digital restrictions management, and software patents.

Code from 1985 under an old Sun licence and included in glibc has been re-licensed by Oracle America under a BSD licence

For the second time in six months, a flamefest has broken out between those who release software under the BSD (Berkely Software Distribution) licence and others who release software under the General Public Licence.

Richard M. Stallman is an American software freedom activist and computer programmer. In September 1983, he launched the GNU Project to create a free Unix-like operating system; he initiated the Free Software Movement; in October 1985 he founded the Free Software Foundation.

What was Richard Stallman's greatest achievement? Some might say it's Emacs. Others might plump for gcc. And then there is the entire GNU project. But for me, his single most important hack was the creation of the GNU General Public Licence.
