AWN - short for Avant Window Navigator is a dock like bar which sits at the bottom of the screen. It provides similar effects as the Dock in Mac OSX Leopard.

The dock at the bottom of the screen gives a nice apple Mac like look for your openSUSE. There are a lot of Themes Plugins and Applets that can be added onto the dock.

Avant Window Navigator(AWN) has always been my favorite dock application. It was by far the most easy to use and far better looking dock application when compared to Gnome-Do or Cairo-Dock. But that was some years ago.

Avant Window Navigator is a dock for the Free Desktop which shows your launchers and open applications. It also contains support for extensions, via plugins for third-party applications, which communicate with the dock with DBus, and via applets, which allows for workspace switchers, system trays, clocks, etc., to be embedded in the dock. These applets can be written in Vala, Python or C.

Avant Window Navigator, or AWN is a neat little dock that sits at the base of your monitor and looks exceedingly nice. It’s a great addition to your compiz-fusion install (in fact, you need compiz or something like it running for AWN to work).

Fancy Tasks is a KDE 4.x dock applications that looks a lot like Avant Window Navigator but at a first look, it seems to be even nicer.

For those who are a crazy fan of the Mac OSX dock, you can now install Avant Window Navigator to achieve the similar dock-like effect in Ubuntu Hardy Heron.

Cairo dock is a Mac OSX dock-like application that you can install in your Linux machine. One of the advantage that it has over other docks is that it does not require any compositing window manager to work. Even on a low-end PC, it will still work fine. This is not possible for docks like Avant Window Navigator which depends on compositing manager (such as Compiz) to function.
