2008: The Year for the Linux Desktop?

http://www.osweekly.com

Here we go again: "As my week progresses, I'm seeing entirely too many utopia articles, such as this one. And while much of the article is spot on, especially with those who would rather play in traffic that use Vista, the problem of wireless Internet connectivity and popular media codecs very much remains in disarray."

March of the desktop penguins

http://www.eweek.com

When Microsoft's Windows XP went gold back in the fall of 2001, the platform was, practically speaking, the only desktop operating system game in town. But is this town now big enough for Windows and Linux?

GNOME Online Desktop: Achieving what was done over a decade ago?

http://pinderkent.blogsavy.com

Those who follow GNOME have probably read about the GNOME Online Desktop. After reading about this concept, I find myself very confused at what it is they’re actually trying to accomplish. Why do I need to imagine that sort of an operating system? I’ve had that for years now.

Confessions of a distro hopper

http://www.insidesocal.com

After years of sticking with Windows, once I discovered that you could download an ISO file, burn it to a bootable CD and run a whole new operating system, easy as that, I've been distro hopping. It all began with Knoppix, went from Puppy and Damn Small Linux, through Ubuntu to Debian, with many a stop in between.

Illegal Codecs Put Me Off Linux

http://itmanagement.earthweb.com

There’s one aspect of Ubuntu, and Linux in general for that matter, that’s putting me off. This is the fact that to play a DVD or use WMA/WMV files I have to install codecs that are technically illegal to use.

Too Many Linux Distros Make For Open Source Mess

http://www.informationweek.com

Remember the 1980s worries about how the "forking" of Unix could hurt that operating system's chances for adoption? That was nothing compared to the mess we've got today with Linux, where upwards of 300 distributions vie for the attention of computer users seeking an alternative to Windows.

Are There Really Too Many Linux Distros?

http://www.informationweek.com

How are Linux distributions like digital cameras? It sounds like a joke on the order of, "What’s the difference between a compulsive gambler and a revolving door?" (Answer: The revolving door knows when to stop.) But the more I’ve thought about it, the more I’ve realized that Linux distros are as varied as digital cameras, and for some of the same reasons.

DRM and open source are the great divide

http://blogs.zdnet.com

If there is any word other than Microsoft which can get an argument going among open source advocates, it is DRM. (The t-shirt is available here.)DRM, Digital Rights Management, is generally found in the form of an encryption wrapper giving control of the content to a rights holder.

The Badger Game

http://www.linuxtoday.com

"For the past couple of weeks, I have been more than a little pensive about the nature of the new GNU General Public License (v3). Since the last set of drafts have come out, I have been concerned that the whole thing seems obstructionist to what I believe we should be focusing on: getting computers to work together and moving past this whole will-they-won't-they interoperability nonsense."

The death of the IM

Why Open Source and Linux Are Losing Momentum

http://www.itbusinessedge.com

This time of year, I make my rounds with the OEMs and get to chat with a number of executives. Several things have floated to the top, but the one I’d like to chat about right now is the comment that Linux demand and interest in open source in general has dropped off sharply.
