Ballmer Bad-Mouths Google Chrome OS

http://www.pcworld.com

You've got to hand it to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer: The man's never afraid to speak his mind. He may be wrong a lot of the time, like in 2007 when he laughed off the iPhone, or defended Vista before an irate user. Nevertheless, Redmond's bombastic boss is always entertaining.

Converting Subversion repositories to Git

http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com

There are a number of version control systems available. Originally there was RCS, which was suitable for individuals, but not really suitable for groups of people. It evolved into CVS, which worked pretty well for years, and then Subversion came along, making a better CVS than CVS itself.

But I’m a open source computer programmer, and for us things are definitely not as clear cut. Five years ago, they probably would have been, but then Ubuntu arrived.

Schedule periodic tasks with cron

http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com

Periodic schedulers come in many shapes and sizes but one constant is cron, the scheduling daemon that will run programs and scripts at arbitrary times or intervals. A Taste Of Mandriva Linux

http://junauza.blogspot.com

Mandriva Linux 2008 is a very capable desktop operating system ideal for beginners as well as Linux power users. Those minor glitches that I have encountered were overshadowed by its rich features and outstanding performance. But, I do hope that those problems will be fixed on their next release. I intend to keep my Mandriva 2008 partition on my back up computer because I’m beginning to love it. I will be tweaking it and further use it for productive purposes.

The unspoken truth of operating systems

http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com

All of these [articles I've been reading lately] ignore one thing which is almost never stated: for a large majority of everyday computer users, people for whom a computer is just another tool or piece of technology, like a refrigerator or a widescreen TV, Windows is just fine.
