Enabling Compiz Fusion On A Fedora 13 GNOME Desktop (NVIDIA GeForce 8100)

http://www.howtoforge.com

This tutorial shows how you can enable Compiz Fusion on a Fedora 13 GNOME desktop (the system must have a 3D-capable graphics card - I'm using an NVIDIA GeForce 8100 here). With Compiz Fusion you can use beautiful 3D effects like wobbly windows or a desktop cube on your desktop. I will use the free nouveau driver in this tutorial instead of the proprietary NVIDIA driver.

Making 3D Free for Innovation: Fedora 13 Graphics Drivers

http://press.redhat.com

Manufacturers today produce a dizzying array of video hardware whose graphics processing power alone outstrips entire computer systems of just ten years ago. However, it’s not always been easy for Linux users to take advantage of this hardware. Until recently, the more exotic 3D acceleration features in particular have often required introducing closed source, proprietary drivers.

The Real Need For Nouveau Power Management

http://www.phoronix.com

We have already published a look at the Fedora 13 Beta, delivered ATI Radeon benchmarks atop Fedora 13 Beta, and have other articles on the way covering this new Fedora release, while in this article we are investigating Nouveau's power performance using this newest Fedora release.

Benchmarks Of Nouveau's Gallium3D Driver

http://www.phoronix.com

As we shared a few days ago, Fedora 13 will provide OpenGL acceleration support for NVIDIA graphics cards via the Nouveau driver when installing the Mesa DRI experimental drivers package. There is finally 3D acceleration for NVIDIA graphics cards using an open-source driver on Linux without having to depend upon NVIDIA's official binary driver.

Ubuntu 10.04's Nouveau Stack Gets Ready

http://www.phoronix.com

One of the slated features for Ubuntu 10.04 early on in its development cycle was support for the Nouveau graphics driver on NVIDIA hardware since it's much better than the xf86-video-nv driver mess and has a much brighter future, which is especially important with 10.04 "Lucid Lynx" being a Long-Term Support (LTS) release.

‘freaking awesome’ – 3D support on nouveau

http://www.happyassassin.net

Nouveau’s 3D support recently became available in Rawhide / Fedora 13 with an update to the mesa-dri-drivers-experimental package. I was impressed when it ran Compiz, really impressed when it ran Neverball, but running Spring is nuts.

A Nouveau 3D Driver That Works For Old NVIDIA Hardware

http://www.phoronix.com

While there is now DRM support in the Linux 2.6.33 kernel for the Nouveau driver that carries the bits for kernel mode-setting, 2D (EXA) acceleration, and other fundamental functions on NVIDIA graphics processors, the Gallium3D driver still is incomplete. However, a new Mesa DRI driver has emerged for Nouveau that provides *working* 3D support for older NVIDIA hardware.

The abrupt merging of Nouveau

http://lwn.net

The merge window is normally a bit of a hectic time for subsystem maintainers. They have two weeks in which to pull together a well-formed tree containing all of the changes destined for the next kernel development cycle. Occasionally, though, last-minute snags can make the merge window even more busy than usual.

Nouveau: a 2.6.33 surprise

http://www.linuxfoundation.org

Linus has released the 2.6.33-rc1 prepatch, closing the merge window for this development cycle. This kernel has a few features which will shake things up, with dynamic tracing being near the top as far as I am concerned. But, perhaps, the most interesting addition is one that almost nobody expected: a reverse-engineered driver for NVIDIA graphics chipsets called “Nouveau.”

On the possible merging of Nouveau

http://lwn.net

Some sites are reporting that the Nouveau driver (a reverse-engineered 3D driver for NVIDIA hardware) will be merged for 2.6.33. It is worth pointing out that this has not (yet) happened. Here's what has happened:

Nouveau To Enter The Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Kernel

http://www.phoronix.com

The Nouveau driver, the X.Org project designed to provide a open-source NVIDIA graphics driver for Linux with 2D/3D/Video acceleration that's developed by cleanly reverse-engineering NVIDIA's binary driver, is about to get promoted in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
