Problems installing Eeebuntu on an Eee PC 700 via bootable USB device - Solved!

I recently had some trouble installing Eeebuntu on a Eee PC 700 via a bootbale USB drive. So, I thought I'd share the experience so that anyone else with the problem can find the solution.

I was in visiting my mother-in-law last week and she asked me to take a look at her Eee PC 700 which recently stopped loading the Xandros-based OS desktop properly.

Did Microsoft force Asus to axe Linux?

http://www.guardian.co.uk

Microsoft is right to warn about the danger of a serious monopoly in search because of Google's dominance. Maybe it is time to apply Microsoft's enlightened approach to monopolies to what is happening in its own backyard.

Linux Netbooks: back to the facts

http://www.tech-no-media.com

There has been a lot of talk about the success or failure of the Linux netbooks recently, to the point that it is now a very controversial topic. I think that it is time to go back to the facts and perform a objective analysis how what we can learn from the Linux netbook market. You will see that Linux netbooks have been neither a complete success nor a complete failure.

PR disaster alert: Asus attacks on Linux

http://www.tech-no-media.com

So ASUS decided to part way with Linux, the operating system that made the brand famous, to join forces with Microsoft. And they decided to make it in a very public way by stating a nice 'better with Windows campaign'. Well, sorry to disappoint you ASUS, but this is turning into a Public relation disaster!

Disable tap-to-click on Ubuntu-EEE for Asus EEE PC

http://www.array.org

Looks like a lot of people have been having trouble with over the sensitive tap-to-click function of the Asus EEE PC's touchpads when using Ubuntu-EEE. I was too, until I stumbled across this article which explains precisely how to disable tap-to-click by enabling the elantech driver. The article is so low in pagerank that you can't find it by googling for the problem.

A look at Ubuntu Netbook Remix

http://www.greenhughes.com

I can't help noticing the number of Asus EEE PCs around now, it is strange to think that twelve months ago these weren't really about and there was still discussion of when will be the "year of the Linux desktop". Of course, events took a different turn, and suddenly the desktop didn't seem so important anymore.

Is Asus backsliding on GNU/Linux?

http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com

Businesses are not philanthropists. They are not, intentionally, educators or evangelists for ideologies. However, from time to time their business models just happen to coincide with their more idealistic customers own interests. Asus is one such company.

Ubuntu Netbook Remix: a detailed explanation

http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com

Lately, there has been a lot of noise about Ubuntu’s Netbook Remix. In an unrelated (and definitely lucky) interview with The Guardian, Mark Shuttleworth hinted that Canonical were about to announce a version of Ubuntu for a new class of devices created by accident by Asus with the EeePc (talk about corporate luck…). Th buzz about this was monumental. But… what is Ubuntu Netbook Remix?

The Best Linux Marketing Tip: Don’t Mention Linux

http://www.thevarguy.com

The VAR Guy wasn’t looking for love, but he found it during a trip to his local CostCo last night. There, he spotted the $299 Eee PC from Asus. It’s built on Linux — but CostCo’s in-store promotional materials for the device barely mention Linux. That may be a smart move. Here’s why.

Asus Eee PC (Part Two): Setting up the full KDE GNU/Linux Experience

http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com

In Part One of my Eee PC series I looked at the hardware specifications of this miniature marvel. In such a small space Asus have managed to cram in a lot and at a price that is so low that it ought be illegal. However, it is a cliche to recall that hardware without software is junk—unless you have a fetish for silicon. In this post I will look at the software on the Eee PC.

£99 laptop could hatch the Linux generation

http://techlun.ch

PC manufacturer Elonex is launching ONE, an ultra-portable laptop, at this week’s Education Show at the NEC. The machine provides a 7″ LCD screen, wireless Internet access and 1GB on-board solid state memory (there is no hard disc to save on costs). It runs Linux with what looks like OpenOffice for word processing and is being aimed at the education market. It costs just £99.

Dreambook Eee PC Competitor Enters the Ring

http://gizmodo.com

With a 7-inch display (88 x 480), a 1GHz Via C7-M processor, maximum 1GB RAM, either a 2GB, 4GB or 8GB flash storage or a 40GB HDD, the Pioneer Computers Dreambook Light IL1 sounds like a worthy competitor to the Eee PC crown. Unfortunately, the $446 starting price is a little steep, even if either Vista or Ubuntu is included in the base price. The Dreambook range will host three other models, including a touchscreen version that sounds a little more interesting.
