A little healthy kompetition

http://larrythefreesoftwareguy.wordpress.com

I go back and forth between the two top desktop environments with Fedora on my Fujitsu laptop — the even numbers, as it turns out, have been GNOME and the odd (with nothing to read into this, honest) have been KDE. Since we’re now at Fedora 13, it’s KDE time.

http://itmanagement.earthweb.com

Not too long back, I highlighted my feelings on KDE, detailing some of its shortcomings and talking about why it’s not necessarily the de facto desktop I’d recommend to people.

E17 review

http://intosimple.blogspot.com

Enlightenment has been quite interesting to me. It has not even got a beta release so far yet I like to use it. That is because, it does things differently. It is very efficient, keeps the CPU far more cooler than any other desktop environment.

Anatomy of a .desktop file

http://linuxcritic.wordpress.com

The .desktop file fills two primary functions: first, it informs the desktop environment how the file is to be handled by the desktop environment with regard to menu placement, display, environmental variables, and similar. In this function, it resides globally in /usr/share/applications/ and for specific users in $HOME/.local/applications.

LXDE: Smaller, Faster than KDE or GNOME

http://itmanagement.earthweb.com

Three years ago, the Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment (LXDE) was a faltering project. However, since then, accounts of LXDE's death have proved greatly exaggerated, and the project is once again flourishing.

http://linuxcritic.wordpress.com

Regular visitors to this site will know that Fluxbox is Trent’s and Patrick’s preferred window manager. I, too, am impressed with its speed and customizability, and its low overhead.

KDE4 overtaking GNOME in terms of usability?

http://www.nuxified.org

Whereas GNOME so far made sacrifices to flexibility and power in order to improve usability KDE4 is succeeding in having its cake and eating it too. They merge flexibility with ingenious design to create a desktop environment in which having lots of options to choose from doesn't impair the ease of use and in some cases actually aids it."

Gnome Shell – Your Next Desktop Environment

http://maketecheasier.com

There’s been some grumbling among the Gnome community about if and when Gnome would have a major overhaul. Well with Gnome 3 we’ll have it in the form of Gnome Shell.
