ATI's Gallium3D Driver Is Still Playing Catch-Up

http://www.phoronix.com

Yesterday we delivered benchmarks showing how the open-source ATI Radeon graphics driver stack in Ubuntu 10.04 is comparing to older releases of the proprietary ATI Catalyst Linux driver. Sadly, the latest open-source ATI driver still is no match even for a two or four-year-old proprietary driver from ATI/AMD, but that is with the classic Mesa DRI driver.

New Open-Source ATI Driver Releases

http://www.phoronix.com

With the Linux 2.6.33 kernel having been released last week where the ATI kernel mode-setting (KMS) DRM code left the kernel's staging area, we knew a new ATI X.Org driver release was imminent. Over the night a new stable DDX driver update has been pushed out for xf86-video-ati as well as a new pre-release for the KMS-supportive 6.13 version that also carries other changes.

AMD's Catalyst Linux driver has improved substantially over the past few years with AMD now providing same-day Linux support, a near feature parity to the Windows Catalyst driver, and first-rate performance. Back in March we shared that the open-source ATI driver had gained support for the unreleased ATI RS880 IGP. Well, the RS880 ended up being turned into the 785G due to some problems on AMD's side, but today this new, much more powerful IGP has launched.

The lack of quality video drivers is destroying Fedora

http://spreadfedora.org

I was user of nvidia video card and I was happy to use it in F7 and F8 but unfortunately I replaced that card with a newer one. That time the card was ATI. Of course I did not check if that card is supported in Fedora 9 (I have to blame myself) and just took it. Recently I noticed the news about that how "open" ATI would be in the future. And now I experience their "openness" with my computer.

Free software drivers: the unmatrix

http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com

Well, it’s been a while—“cough!”—the set’s all dusty since my previous post about 3D cards...One thing that isn’t quite dusty though, is the state of free software drivers!
