Effective Free Software advocacy

https://fsfe.org

Explaining Free Software is an important but sometimes difficult task. Complex ideas and terminology, subtle variations and an intensely political history can all get in the way of effective advocacy. These guidelines aim to help you to communicate clearly and consistently, and present yourself and what you're saying in a compelling and credible light.

Why FLOSS? Look at the Numbers!

http://www.dwheeler.com

David A. Wheeler's somewhat dated but very informative paper looks at the numbers of using FLOSS and compares it with proprietary solutions presenting a very solid case for further FLOSS adoption. There is also a rather terse presentation available which sums up the highlights.

Why and How I Join the Cloud Hype, and So Can You, Free Culture Amigos!

http://blog.ofset.org

I suggest that fellow advocates of the free culture movement jump on the cloud bandwagon and compete with the hype generator(s?) for the seat behind the steering wheel, popularizing the free culture concepts during the competition, as a peaceful way of fighting the cloud hypes.

Free Software Parable

http://tod.fm

“What’s in this food?”
“You’ll like it. Just eat it.”
“I want to know what’s in it.”
“That is none of your business. It’s healthy. Eat it.”

Why You Should Only Buy Linux Pre-Installed on your Systems

http://www.geeksaresexy.net

Many Linux users are geeks, and vice versa, and geeks can build their own systems or at least install an OS, so why should we buy systems with Linux pre-installed? Why is it so important if the OS is free? Let’s talk about a little thing called “market share.”

Advocacy doesn’t work if you tell someone they’re wrong

http://blogs.fsfe.org

Generally it isn’t a good idea to offend someone you’re trying to convince. This is sounding almost too obvious, but offending someone we are trying to get to free software is a tactic we often use unconsciously. Instead of getting your point across it will likely lead the other to strengthen or adopt a contrary believe.

How to Sell Linux to Schools- Part 2

http://linuxandall.wordpress.com

Building on the last post, I welcome the opportunity to share some of my experiences with deploying Linux in schools. It is a very broad topic however I will stay with the previous outline. First of all, it is a matter of migrating schools to Linux, not selling them. Second, the approach is different based on whether the school in located in a developing country, the EU or North America.

How to Sell Linux to Schools

http://linuxandall.wordpress.com

In my earlier post ‘How to Sell Linux’ I looked at three different ways how to popularize Linux and make it more mainstream as well as a household name. In the post I will look specifically at how I would sell Linux to schools, examining all the aspects of such a deployment and how I would do it and what distro and software I would use.

The Hobbyists OS

http://thistleweb.co.uk

Microsoft's army of apologists like to spread the word that Linux is a "hobbyists OS", so this post is a look at what that means and why it's a label more suited to Windows. The attack is meant to draw attention to the fact that anyone can write code which appears in Linux, inferring the quality of the code is dubious. Basically, it can't be good quality if people outside the corporation write it.
