Nine days left for patent deals

http://www.itwire.com.au

"There are exactly nine days left for Microsoft to get other Linux companies to sign up for patent cross-licensing deals. The GPLv3 is set to be published on June 29 and once that is done, any new deal will be subject to the terms which it includes."

Free QA for patent trolls? Why?

Helping patent trolls with their QA is like going through bandits' ammunition and throwing out the dud rounds for them before they try to rob you.

http://www.infoworld.com

"The Linux faithful might be staring down the barrel of another round of Microsoft's legal taunts, but at last week's Linux Foundation Summit, the reaction was more ho-hum than oh-no."

Massachusetts Far Behind on Open Document Format Adoption

http://www.linuxinsider.com

Massachusetts' open formats policy is off to a slow start with only 250 of the government's 50,000 PCs outfitted with the necessary technology. Since the policy was publicly introduced last year, the plan has seen resistance from state employees and Microsoft, lobbying heavily against the format change.

CEO of Mandriva: We will not go to Canossa - No deal with Microsoft

http://corp.mandriva.com

Novell, Xandros and Linspire have signed well publicized agreements with Microsoft. Rumors on the Web have hinted that Mandriva might be next on the list. Mandriva believes in interoperability, which must be based on open standards, like ODF. They also believe that software patent threats are just FUD. So no deal with Microsoft from Mandriva.

A response to "Don't let Red Hat fold!"

http://binaryfreedom.info

Over the last few days, a lot of controversy has erupted over my blog posting about a possible patent deal between Red Hat and Microsoft. The original intent of this post was to help rally support behind Red Hat and show them that they had the backing of the F/OSS community. Unfortunately, many people thought this post was meant to generate fear about a possible deal....

The Peer to Patent Project Has Begun - 5 patents listed

http://www.groklaw.net

The first patent applications we are invited to try to disqualify by looking for prior art have been posted on the Peer to Patent Project website. This is the project working to provide the USPTO with information about prior art during the application process. It's an experiment, and it's historic. It's never been tried before, to let the public provide input into the application process.

» Linspire, Microsoft and aircraft carriers

http://blogs.zdnet.com

Microsoft’s agreements with Linux vendors also happen to dispel “patent risk,” which to my mind is as illusory as ghosts given that the odds of Microsoft ever filing patents suits against Linux are virtually nil (huge risks down that path, given that patents can bite Microsoft as much as Linux…probably more so).

Ubuntu says no, but will the Mandriva management follow suit?

http://opensourcelearning.info

On the Mandriva Cooker mailinglist there was the following request based on my earlier article that made the case that Mandriva and TurboLinux might be next to partner with Microsoft.

It is a speculation, but I think that it would be good to get a clear statement from the management on where Mandriva stands, especially regarding the alleged Microsoft patents.

GPLv2 or GPLv3?: Inside the Debate

http://news.google.com

This is a comprehensive explanation of the different perspectives of the Free Software Foundation and Linus Torvalds on the GPL. It explains that Linus likes the GPL mainly because of its share-and-share-alike principle, and doesn't care about the FSF's vision of software freedom.

Make sure Red Hat doesn't sign the patent deal with Microsoft

http://binaryfreedom.info

Even though it's a corporation, Red hat has continually placed being a good member of the open source community over being one of the corporate community. Their dedication to open source is outstanding, and yet they receive very little thanks. As a stronghold and *the* prime of example of corporate GNU/Linux, they are an important domino. We have

Should We Fight for Ogg Vorbis?

http://www.linuxjournal.com

One thing I should state immediately is that I think that Ogg Vorbis is great: it's cool technology doing all the right things in the right way. So my doubts about this campaign have nothing to do with any weaknesses in Ogg. It's just that I wonder whether this is really something the free software world should be expending much energy on when there are other more pressing problems.
