Linux vs. Microsoft: Get Ready for the Patent War

http://www.osweekly.com

So, this is what we have been leveled to: patent wars. Earlier this week, I learned that the Linux Foundation has a portfolio of patents they own themselves and are quite willing to take Microsoft on in a patent war. And while I support the Linux Foundation fighting the good fight, I believe there are some issues that had better be considered.

Optimizing Linux System Performance

http://www.linuxdevcenter.com

Performance optimization in Linux doesn't always mean what we might think. It's not just a matter of outright speed; sometimes it's about tuning the system so that it fits into a small memory footprint. You'd be hard-pressed to find a programmer that does not want to make programs run faster, regardless of the platform. Linux programmers are no exception.

Downgrading: The New Windows Vista Trend

http://www.osweekly.com

"In contrast with Linux and even OS X, [Vista]’s expensive and bloated. Vista’s look may be shiny and attractive, but users aren’t being fooled by what their eyes are seeing. Anybody up to writing good directory software?

Tue, 2007-02-20 11:17 — David Jonathan

From the very start, directories have served a very useful purpose on the Internet. (One I find useful for example is Free Web Directory). News sites can also be considered directories: they index and categorize news stories! What about categorizing software? In the open source world you get Savannah, SourceForge, Freshmeat; there are still, believe it or not, shareware and freeware directories like FileBuzz, PCWin Download Center and Freeware Downloads (although you need to be careful, as they are not like their free-as-in-freedom counterparts).

Is better education the key to finding better software?

Sat, 2007-03-03 03:25 — Edward Russel

About Jonathon's article Anybody Up To Writing Good Directory Software?, it's clear that the topic of software directories is very hot. Most of what you find on Google, however, are not pointing to free and open soruce software -- or worse, they mix the two. Examples of such sites are Freeware Downloads and Shareware Download, which simply don't focus on "free as in freedom", and still can be used as good free software directories.
