Desktop Cost: Linux vs. Windows

http://itmanagement.earthweb.com

How much did your computer cost? $500? $1,000? $2,000? How much has it cost you since you bought it? The price of a computer is not a one-time expense — it is rather, an ongoing one. How much you pay for your computer over a year's time, or the entire lifetime of the computer, depends greatly on your choice of operating system.

Split APE and FLAC Files in Ubuntu and Add Tags by Cue File

http://webupd8.blogspot.com

Did you ever downloaded a single APE or FLAC file consisting of multiple songs? If so, it's quite annoying to try and listen to only one song. But you can split the files into multiple songs exactly like in the cue file (each song's start and end time are saved in the cue file, so we'll know where to cut the big file).

starting perl GUI programming

http://www.handlewithlinux.com

I need to extend my programming knowledge, I know as a system administrator, I should automate everything I need to do more than twice and therefore I need more programming skills. I've been thinking of learning shell programming, as it is the most ubiquitous in Linux systems. I already know some shell programming and for most of the simple tasks I can easily write a small shell script.

Anybody up to writing good directory software?

Tue, 2007-02-20 11:17 — David Jonathan

Since the very beginning, directories (of any kind) have had a very central role in the internet. (I have recently grown fond of Free Web Directory. Even Slashdot can be considered a directory: a collection of great news and invaluable user-generated comments. As far as software is concerned, doing a quick search on Google about software directories will return the free (as in freedom) software directories like Savannah, SourceForge, Freshmeat and so on, followed by shareware and freeware sites such as FileBuzz, PCWin Download Center and All Freeware (great if you're looking for shareware and freeware, but definitely less comprehensive than their free-as-in-freedom counterparts).

Is better education the key to finding better software?

Sat, 2007-03-03 03:25 — Edward Russel

I read David Jonathon's article Anybody Up To Writing Good Directory Software? the other day, which got me thinking about software directories in general. As David mentioned, many of the software directories one finds when doing a quick google search are free as in beer, not as in freedom. But what interests me is the software directories that already exist, providing a combination of both free as in beer software, and open source software. Sites such as Freeware Downloads and Shareware Download don't advertise themselves as providing free as in liberty software, but each of them have a good selection of open source software available... if you know where to look.
