At what point do we accept that – whether we like it or not – closed source applications will eventually have to be let in to this otherwise "open" world? After all, this has already been happening for years, despite the Linux purists kicking and screaming the entire time.

No. Closed source are not

No. Closed source are not here to stay. By virtue of being proprietary, they are inferior softwares in the long run.

Like DRM, they are ineffective for long term survival.

Proprietary software is here to stay

Proprietary software is here to stay as long as people accept proprietary software. People accept proprietary software because they feel it is more convenient to use it rather than invest in a free solution. People may also accept proprietary software because they don't understand the harm it causes to their freedom. Either way, proprietary software exists because people are willing to be bound to it.

The day society chooses to value their freedom is the day that proprietary software will go away. I am pessimistic about this day arriving anytime soon. Instead of just moaning about it though, I choose to do something positive as I discuss freedom whenever the topic of computer software arises in order increase the awareness of freedom.

I disagree. As long as there

I disagree.

As long as there is someone who is willing to respect others' freedom. We will have a chance to take out even the biggest monopolists. of course, the more competitors that respect your fellow human beings, the better our chance.

Precisely because we were better competitors. Precisely because we didn't cripple our product. Precisely because this is how innovation work. Precisely this is how economic growth occurs.(If you don't believe me, look at the agricultural industry, the automobile industry, etc)

If proprietary vendors refuses to do it. than someone will. That somebody will be rewarded.

This isn't some utopian version of the world. Artists and musicians are already doing it, innovating new business models that doesn't relies on copyright. Authors see record sale by releasing e-book to the public. There are many more who will profit the same way.

Those monopolists won't last forever. It is time for us to take our rightful place in history as winners in the economic revolution by doing what we do best, creating great free softwares and building institutions.
