Guess what conference is attended by pro-Microsoft folks who have been publicly attacking ODF along with friends at Microsoft?

Big ? - Linsux.org?

We welcome three new members to this site, Dagaard, timestandstill, and zeebo.

All three are conspicuous by immediately voting DOWN articles from Boycott Novell.

All three are even more conspicuous by the impressive number of votes they have already cast.

After 1hr 19mins membership, Dagaard had voted 180 times.

After 5hrs 34mins membership, zeebo had voted 152 times.

After 3 days 7hrs membership, timestandstill had voted 298 times.

After seeing the curious intentions displayed towards this site, by Linsux.org, I have to wonder if this trio are Linsux trolls pursuing some newly-hatched plot against this site.

Further suspicions

In their quest to seek as many votes as quickly as possible, these three also voted UP a number of spammed articles advertising batteries on this site earlier today. UP for spam, but DOWN for Boycott Novell, sounds like Linsux.org to me.

There is also evidence that they are voting on archived stories to quickly inflate their vote-count. Maybe, they are attempting to seize control of this site because their own is doing so badly.

Not on my watch

I've already had to block some accounts for abuse (and I mean ridiculous over use) of the down vote option. And... it looks like these accounts are for just for voting down stories - nothing more. This is abuse so they are now blocked.

Anybody up to writing good directory software?

Tue, 2007-02-20 11:17 — David Jonathan

Since the very beginning, directories (of any kind) have had a very central role in the internet. (I have recently grown fond of Free Web Directory. Even Slashdot can be considered a directory: a collection of great news and invaluable user-generated comments. As far as software is concerned, doing a quick search on Google about software directories will return the free (as in freedom) software directories like Savannah, SourceForge, Freshmeat and so on, followed by shareware and freeware sites such as FileBuzz, PCWin Download Center and All Freeware (great if you're looking for shareware and freeware, but definitely less comprehensive than their free-as-in-freedom counterparts).

Is better education the key to finding better software?

Sat, 2007-03-03 03:25 — Edward Russel

I read David Jonathon's article Anybody Up To Writing Good Directory Software? the other day, which got me thinking about software directories in general. As David mentioned, many of the software directories one finds when doing a quick google search are free as in beer, not as in freedom. But what interests me is the software directories that already exist, providing a combination of both free as in beer software, and open source software. Sites such as Freeware Downloads and Shareware Download don't advertise themselves as providing free as in liberty software, but each of them have a good selection of open source software available... if you know where to look.
