The Mobile World Congress in Barcelona from February 15-18, 2010 will have the Garmin and Asus alliance presenting their nüvifone A50, a smartphone with navigation capabilities.

Acer announced its first Android smartphone, which will also be the first Android phone based on Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor. The Acer Liquid offers a WVGA touchscreen, HSPA 3G support, plus Android 1.6, and reportedly also provides WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, and a five megapixel camera.

Sony Ericsson announced its first Android phone, along with a "UX" user interface targeting social networking. The Xperia X10 offers from 8 to 16GB of flash storage, a four-inch touchscreen, and an 8.1-megapixel camera with face recognition and geo-tagging, plus the usual 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS features.

TechFaith Wireless and Qigi Future Technology announced a smartphone that runs the Google Android mobile Linux stack. The i6-Goal is only the second Android phone to launch, and reportedly includes a 2.8-inch touchscreen, quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, and a two-megapixel camera.

Following a number of Windows Mobile 6.5 based phones, smartphone market newcomer Acer has now announced its first Android model. It's based on a Snapdragon processor, likely clocked at 1 GHz, with 256 MB RAM. The Android 1.6 operating system (code named "Donut") is housed on its internal 512 MB Flash drive and there is a microSDHC slot for adding extra storage.

Android developers looking forward to the inclusion of multi-touch support in the upcoming release of Google's open source mobile operating system, code named "Donut", will need to wait even longer. It was previously believed that Donut, which would see a final release as Android version 2.0, would include the much anticipated multi-touch gesture support.

Samsung Mobile announced its second Android phone of the week, this time aimed at Sprint's 3G network. Now available for pre-order for a Nov. 1 shipment, the "Moment" is based on an 800MHz Samsung processor, and offers a 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen, 3.2-megapixel camera, WiFi, Bluetooth, plus GPS, says Samsung.

AT&T announced it will offer the Garmin-Asus G60 Nuvifone in the U.S. next week. In other Linux smartphone news, T-Mobile announced pricing and availability for its Android-based Motorola Cliq, and Android developers are protesting Google's shutdown of an open source version of Google Apps by well-known "modder" Cyanogen, says eWEEK.

Cypress Semiconductor announced a touchscreen device driver for Android and Linux that supports Cypress' TrueTouch touchscreen controllers, complete with "all-points" multi-touch signaling support. Meanwhile, "Cyanogen" has hacked a multi-touch interface for Google's Nexus One phone, and Google is upgrading the Android-based phone's spotty 3G support, says eWEEK.
