Since the very beginning, directories (of any kind) have had a very central role in the internet. (I have recently grown fond of Free Web Directory. Even Slashdot can be considered a directory: a collection of great news and invaluable user-generated comments. As far as software is concerned, doing a quick search on Google about software directories will return the free (as in freedom) software directories like Savannah, SourceForge, Freshmeat and so on, followed by shareware and freeware sites such as FileBuzz, PCWin Download Center and All Freeware (great if you're looking for shareware and freeware, but definitely less comprehensive than their free-as-in-freedom counterparts).

Due to the fact that the #2 tag here is Microsoft, I find this hilarious.

@dehumaniser What Microsoft
@dehumaniser
What Microsoft does often concerns the free software community. Patents, formats, standards, legislation they lobby for, monopolization, "IP", deals (with governments, OEMs and companies like Novell), FUD against FOSS, etc. The list goes on and on regarding the areas where the FOSS community needs to be made aware of what MS is up to. Besides that, it's not the site or the community's choice but the media's choice to make so many comparisons between FOSS and MS products. I think using the "microsoft" tag when a story or article is partly about Microsoft is valid.

peacemaker: I agree, but then a software package that actually makes it easier and more comfortable to use a free desktop (even if that package is proprietary) should not be complained about.
