One of the greatest tools of any Linux or BSD system is the console. There are numerous different shells that go with it as well as graphical interfaces to allow you to make use of it. In this overview we will be covering just one of those applications, namely the KDE "Konsole" graphical console interface application.

I code a lot and also write some blogs, during writing sometimes my thumb or palm touches the touchpad and results in mouse pointer moving to another window or at a different place within the same window. While coding in "vi" editor in konsole, sometimes I have even accidentally closed the konsole terminal resulting in me loosing all the unsaved work.

It's been a rough road, but it seems as if KDE 4.1 is showing signs of the vision becoming a reality. And it now seems as if several people within the GNOME community are seeing the writing on the wall too: GNOME 2.x has reached its goal - now what?

We know all about how powerful the GNU/Linux terminal is. However, it’s a pain to have to fire up a terminal emulator like Konsole or gnome-terminal, wait for a few seconds for it load, and then have to keep Alt-Tabbing to it.

I work a lot at the console level, I even lauch some programs directly from there, and I know there are a lot of users like me.

Somtimes I also open two or even three terminals to monitor differente processes on the same machine or even on different PCs using ssh connection.

I installed KDE4rc1 on KUbuntu 7.10 64bit, as explained in the corresponding page (I installed from packages). This is my first time running a full KDE4 session, and while I am very exited by some applications (dolphin, konsole, kate marble, and more or less all kde4games), I must admit that as a full session, it’s not worth it.
