Open Source Society president Don Christie's blog, on Stuff, is reporting the State Services Commission has agreed to release the code for the new New Zealand government portal under the open source GPL licence.

I have read a few blog entries lately questioning the value of open source. The most over-the-top comes from Andy Patrizio. In his posting, titled “Big Money and Open Source May Not Compute”, Andy sounds like a school yard bully angry that his turf is finally being challenged

The virtual learning environment could be where university libraries first encounter open source. An increasing number of content management and portal systems are also open source and many university libraries are involved in setting up open source repositories. As acceptance of open source grows, the next step will be to consider open source solutions for the core integrated library system.

Is the UK really a laggard in open source? Red Hat denies there is any problem. "Red Hat does more business in the UK than in any other European country," Malcolm Herbert, senior manager of consulting practice at Red Hat UK, told ZDNet at the Open Source Forum event. "There's no problem with open source take-up in the UK."

Like all of the other forum solutions I’ve covered so far in this series, PunBB is written in PHP. The current stable is 1.2.17, and development work is being done on the 1.3 branch.
