Ubuntu 8.10 is the upcoming version of the Ubuntu operating system. The common name given to this release from the time of its early development was 'Intrepid Ibex'

With the release of Ubuntu Hardy Heron now behind us, most eyes are turned to October when Intrepid Ibex, or Ubuntu Linux 8.10, will make its debut. While Hardy Heron was designed to be stable enough to be a long-term support release, Intrepid Ibex promises to be packed with more exciting features, something that Ubuntu fans always enjoy.

This Tutorial provides instructions and notes on upgrading Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) server to Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex), released on the 30th of October 2008.

If, like myself, you don’t want to take the plunge into the depths of the Intrepid Ibex alpha builds, but tend to be very inquisitive about new features, I have found myself a happy medium for my main Ubuntu machine that is currently running 8.04.1 (Hardy Heron).

With Hardy now past feature-freeze it’s time to start to plan features that are being lined up for inclusion after Ubuntu 8.04 LTS is released in April. And so I’d like to introduce you to the Intrepid Ibex, the release which is planned for October 2008, and which is likely to have the version number 8.10.

The release of Ubuntu 8.10 "Intrepid Ibex" is just moments away. If indeed this latest version of Ubuntu will sport a new theme, then we will certainly be seeing an ultra-fresh default wallpaper.

This guide will show you how to go about upgrading to Intrepid Ibex (Ubuntu 8.10) from a previous version of Ubuntu. It’s important that you follow a sequential upgrade path. That is, you should only follow these directions to upgrade from Hardy to Intrepid.

Just before Intrepid Ibex came out, I had a few things to say about the new artwork. In a last-minute switch, things improved a little, but I was still never impressed with Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex in the way that Fedora 10 or Ubuntu Hardy Heron impressed me. It seems we are barely even started into the new release cycle, yet I can already say there are some very promising choices.
