An update to my previous article My vi first steps

I use vi instead of command line editors to do mass replacing of blocks and editing many files in the following way:

say I know all files I need to edit in the current directory contain the text foo and the rest of the files don't.

I open all files containing foo in vi:

MultiTail lets you view one or multiple files like the original tail program. The difference is that it creates multiple windows on your console (with ncurses). It can also monitor wildcards: if another file matching the wildcard has a more recent modification date, it will automatically switch to that file. That way you can, for example, monitor a complete directory of files.

Scalpel is a fast file carver that reads a database of header and footer definitions and extracts matching files from a set of image files or raw device files. Scalpel is filesystem-independent and will carve files from FATx, NTFS, ext2/3, or raw partitions. It is useful for both digital forensics investigation and file recovery.

Web Console is open source application that provides access to a web server command prompt from an Internet browser. Furthermore, it includes file manager, files upload/download feature and text files editor, which allows to edit files directly on a web server through browser.

You can’t always blame data loss on hardware failure. A clumsy user can be just as harmful. PhotoRec is a nifty little command-line based tool that can recover accidentally deleted files.

The rm command can be a powerful tool for deleting data -- until you delete the wrong files or directories. Thankfully, the ext3undel utility can recover accidently removed data on ext3 filesystems.
