The Ayatana Indicators work has given us a crisp, clean basis for indicators in the panel. We've said they will all look a particular way, and behave a particular way. And we've said they will be placed on the right of the panel.
But why limit indicators to the panel? Let's make it possible for applications to use indicators themselves, for all the things that indicators are good at...

I know some people are really, really, really, up in arms about the new left window buttons in Lucid Lynx, but I like the change, and the new plan for windicators on the the right. The problem I have is that there are very few new themes you can change to and still preserve the buttons on the left.

Since Mark Shuttleworth said that moving the Metacity window buttons to the left "opens up the space on the right nicely", lots of button ideas came out. The most controverted one is probably Esfera, an idea which Mark forwarded to the Ayatana mailing list. A recent idea by Izo makes a lot more sense than all the previous ideas. The icons/indicators can be removed by removing two packages: indicator-me and indicator-messages.

The default positioning of window-management buttons in Ubuntu 10.04 has generated a lot of controversy. But given the decreasing importance of these buttons in modern desktop environments, I'm left wondering if the issue is really so important.  In a year or two, after all, window titlebars may be a thing of the past.

The default position of the window controls will remain the left, throughout beta1. We're interested in data which could influence the ultimate decision. There are good reasons both for the change, and against them, and ultimately the position will be decided based on what we want to achieve over time.

I have used Window Maker for some time and have always made my own custom menus. However, the current maintainer of the Window Maker window manager gave us a small tutorial on how to add the Debian menu to a custom menu.
