In our house, the refrigerator door is where we post the family calendar, showing our family and friends' birthdays, school terms, and important events, along with public holidays. We create the calendar using a nifty command-line program called PCAL, which produces a standard one-month-per-page calendar with each day in a separate box.

When I hear "mail merge," I usually think of personalizing letters and printing envelopes. However, many other projects can make use of mail merge. This year I tackled a new Christmas gift project by using mail merge in OpenOffice.org (OOo) to create a tear-off daily calendar, personalized with holidays and family events. Here's how.

Gcal can be used for a lot of calendar related questions. A zillion calendar options. Of course, if you are not a calendar freak, this is not the main selling point.

Evolution is the official personal information manager and workgroup information management tool for GNOME. It combines e-mail, calendar, address book, and task list management functions. Its user interface and functionality are similar to Microsoft Outlook. It can be connected to a Microsoft Exchange Server using its web interface and an Evolution add-on.

We have reviewed a number of free email clients before. You have tasks, calendar, email and social networking (via plugins) all built in into one interface and they all gel together. Evolution does that for Linux, but Thunderbird falls short of the much needed integration. This is where SpiceBird comes in.
