A major modification done to Kongoni, is moving from the classic kernel, found at kernel.org to the FSF kernel, which has removed all of the non-free firmware. Also removed from git repository any trace of non-free software and firmware. Kongoni now uses GRUB2 as the default boot loader and also has a very good OS detection setup. KDE updated to 4.4.5, GNU IceCat 3.6.8.

Free Software Foundation (FSF) today announced updates related to its list of fully free GNU/Linux distributions, including the addition of one new distribution called Kongoni, and a milestone release of the Trisquel system.
