School will soon be out for the summer. There are a slew of Linux programs for kids -- including Tux Paint, Celestia and Edubuntu -- that parents can use to entertain the little ones.

Five years after the debut of its popular open-source drawing program for children, New Breed Software announced the release of Tux Paint 0.9.17.

Kiddix Computing has come up with a Linux-based operating system designed especially for children aged 5-10. All of the icons for applications are situated around the edge of the desktop. There's e-mail, a browser, an office suite, a paint program and some games (both educational and just plain fun). All are built with open-source code, and everything has a user interface designed for kids.

paint-mono is a port of Paint.NET. The only way it could be built in the past was using a development version of MonoDevelop and there was no way of generating packages for it.

Tux Paint 0.9.18's color palette now includes a rainbow-colored button which brings up a color picker. The colors available for painting have expanded from less than twenty to over 50,000!
