Many image editing programs have a library or "scrapbook" where you can store images for future use. You can then open this scrapbook (within the image editing app) and drag and drop the image into the image you're working on(usually as a new layer). You can easily create a scrapbook for Gimp and store images for future use to edit and incorporate in all your photo projects.

We use Gallery2 quite a bit for our photos and accordingly use a handy tool called Gallery Remote to upload images to the albums. Under Linux and OSX, there aren't really any efficient ways that I know of to upload lots of photos at once. Under Windows you can use an explorer type plug-in in the uploads section. Gallery Remote is a nice little java application which can handle drag-and-drop image adding, multiple photo addition, addition of captions and changing names, and some other features such as saving login information for multiple accounts or galleries. However, I have had trouble installing Gallery Remote on all of my Linux boxes so far, so I will show you the results of my Googling below and what has worked.

You don’t need to have played with a digital SLR camera for long to run into the continuing frustration that is RAW images. RAW images offer very high image quality without the nasty compression artifacts of often found in consumer cameras using the JPEG format.

Even the most basic digital cameras can store a lot of useful information about photos in the EXIF format, including exposure time, aperture settings, focal length, and metering mode. The EXIF metadata can also contain the photo's geographical coordinates, which provide the exact position of where the photo was taken, but only few cameras on the market support this feature. However, you can add geographical information to your photos (i.e., geotag them) even if you don't have a fancy camera or GPS receiver using the Geotag tool. This nifty utility allows you to quickly geotag multiple photos in one go and do some other interesting things with them.
