I finally made the switch from Adobe Photoshop to GIMP, and it was a success. Here are some begginers how-tos and tutorials that I found useful and can help you start photo-editing with GIMP.

recently got the chance to read and work through many of the tutorials in the book The Artist’s Guide to GIMP, 2nd Edition: creative techniques for photographers written by Michael J. Hammel. Having only a sloppy, self-taught understanding of GIMP going into this I wanted to accomplish two things.

No matter which Linux distro you run, chances are it came with a magnificent little image editor called GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program). Unlike Paint and other free-with-your-OS image editors, GIMP is a full featured graphics app with a broad range of capabilities that rival those os Adobe Photoshop.

Gimp just seems to be a buzz topic lately. Since I have searches pouring into my site to find the five or six little Gimp tutorials I have, here is a whole list of resources from my personal bookmark list, covering everything from beginners to intermediate to expert advice:

At about this time in my blogging "career", I'd have to assess that I'm at least one of the top five online pundits who have made a name for themselves by taking the Gimp's side in the Gimp vs. Photoshop debate on the side of Gimp. And not just Gimp, but Gimp Classic, as opposed to Gimp-in-Photoshop's skin. And not just taken sides, but dug a foxhole from which to lob mortars.

Half of the battle in graphic design is working smarter, not harder. I've done some tutorials for Gimp which push that tool to its limits, but too many folks focus on Gimp and forget that we have a whole arsenal of power graphics tools on the Linux desktop. Here is one image which would have been a pain to do in Gimp, but a snap in Inkscape.

The GIMP team is preparing for the release of GIMP 2.4.0. Today marks the release of GIMP 2.3.19, which fixes a host of issues to the point where most outstanding GIMP problems are now fixed or will be fixed in the very near future.
