Is OpenOffice geeky?

I do not think that real geeks will choose WYSIWYG editors like Microsoft Word to write *books* and serious writings. The real geeks and hackers will prefer something like TeX, LaTeX, (G)roff. OpenOffice is just a good alternative to proprietary WYSIWYG, but it has never been aimed at any kind of either scientific or large (books, etc) publications.
