Today at GUADEC I presented the results of the GNOME Census, a project we have been working on for a while. For as long as I have been involved in GNOME, press, analysts, potential partners and advisory board members have been asking us: How big is GNOME?

Community relations and free software strategy specialist Nearly Consulting has published the results of its GNOME Census analysing developer participation in the GNOME project and looking for patterns within the project itself

One thing we have learned from KDE4 is that its not a good idea to make drastic change to a desktop environment that the users have been used to for a long time. Hopefully the Gnome developers will keep that in mind as they work on Gnome 3.0 release for next year.

One of the questions I get asked a lot is the "KDE vs GNOME" question. My first reaction is "that's not the issue," - the message I want to send the world is not why GNOME is better than KDE.

Lucas Rocha, on the behalf of all GNOME developers worldwide, has just announced the release of GNOME 2.28.0.

With Gnome 2.26 safely out the door the Gnome development team is now planning for Gnome 3.0, a release it expects to make in March next year. Responding to growing criticism that the Gnome project lacks vision the team says that the 3.0 milestone release will have to have “big user-visible changes”.

Today, the GNOME Project celebrates the release of GNOME 2.32, the latest version of the popular, multi-platform free desktop environment and of its developer platform. Released on schedule, to the day, GNOME 2.32 builds on top of a long series of successful six months releases to offer the best experience to users and developers.

First of all, I think that the GNOME project is in a really strange place right now. Others called it “decadence” but I’ve been thinking of it more as a state of transition. Things are changing in GNOME and I think that it’s largely just a reflection of time. GNOME has been around for more than a decade. Leadership is changing. GNOME is evolving into something else.
