For the most recent week, I picked the four stories that most excited me about the future of Linux and free software. Here is the trend that I see: Linux and free software are rapidly becoming more accepted, and more mainstream. Pretty soon, you won’t see the name “Linux” being hidden behind names like Android, WebOS, and Meego.

Several readers wrote in to share their stories in response to my “Why I Use Linux” article, and now I am going to start sharing their responses with all of you. One of the stories is below. This one comes from Ken.

I consider the vast majority of people's personal random complaints about Linux to be absolutely irrelevant. I really don't care if one random person wants Linux to work like Windows in a particular way. The recent stories floating around are no exception, either.

The world of free software is full of amazing and even heroic stories (the gcc toolkit for its quality and flexibility, Linux and free desktops for their size and sheer ambition, Samba and Mono for their tenacity at keeping up with confusing quasi-standards) but one of my favorite recent stories is the opening of the iPhone.

There are two stories posted on Linux Today that I knew I was going to rant about as soon as I saw them: Nominum Solves Kaminsky Attack, and Novell's iPrint Open to Attack, Say Researchers. What do these stories have in common? I was thinking perhaps institutionalized delusional thinking and incompetence, but maybe I'm being too harsh.

For a good part of last week, your reviewer's musings about Ubuntu Linux was among the top five most-read stories on washingtontimes.com. Since the other top stories concerned health-insurance reform or the H1N1 vaccine and similar weighty topics, the presence of a geek-oriented column came as a pleasant surprise.
