It has been suggested by one of our prominent community members that the use of negative votes should be confined to demoting spam. As the individual responsible for the introduction of negative voting on FSDaily, I feel I should explain my rationale for its inclusion and provide my tips on negative voting.

I feel FSD is bigger than me

Please think of it as simply my position... FSDaily doesn't really have a position unless you are talking about the FSD community and then its position is a bit tricky to pin down.

I just wanted to explain why I added the feature but, obviously, now that the feature is there it can be used in different ways.

I was going to write to you on this very topic

I only use negative voting on spam.
My main problem is that I see those 'stories' when I look up all the stories I have voted on.

It would be nice if negative votes could be hidden. Maybe add an extra link to view negative votes we've made.

Another suggestion is to remove the ability to post stories for < 1 day old users. Often the spammers accounts are almost the same age as their spam. Additionally I am sure I have seen multiple spam from the same users on different days a few times. If those users are not removed, at least take away their toys.

Yes. We should fix that...

Currently, when a story is marked as spam it gets unpublished which means it disappears from queues but it is not deleted from the database. One of my many jobs is going through stories marked as spam and deleting any that I confirm as spam. Until I delete them they stay in the list of stories you have voted for. Once I do delete them they should no longer appear in your list. And, if you look now, you will hopefully find them all gone.

I think this can be changed though quite easily and I will see what can be done about it. I'm sure it will be as simple as changing a query.

Thanks for pointing this out because I was not even aware it was happening.

One more suggestion..

Since we are using votes to do more than just mark stories of interest to us personally, perhaps we need an additional ability to mark stories as favourites. At present I have to wade through many stories that I have voted on to find my favourite ones.

Looking into it

There are some Drupal modules that do this. I'll look into it and see if any of them are usable for FSDaily.
