Note: I posted this article but I TOTALLY disagree with what this guy is saying. The basic gist of the article is "oh, it's okay, let's just all use whatever os will do the job with the right apps. I love linux, he loves windows, let's coexist!" I feel like his question about what is "better" ignores the fundamental problems to do with freedom.

Most large installations of IT

Most large installations of IT are in business. If a business is not selling Linux, they may not be in a rush to adopt it. Depending on the complexity of the IT system, the cost of switching can be merely the cost of starting up a Linux terminal server or a painful search for weird apps and rewriting code. One thing any business wants to avoid is disruption. Few will have a trivial switching process. They have to migrate in small steps to avoid disruption. This results in compulsory inter-operation for a long time. M$ created the lock-in deliberately to prolong their monopoly. There are few businesses that can escape it easily. No matter how great the long-term payoff, the short-term pain is significant.

Anyone can see FLOSS is better in the long run. The question is how to adopt it.
