Anybody up to writing good directory software?
Tue, 2007-02-20 11:17 — David JonathanSince the very beginning, directories (of any kind) have had a very central role in the internet. (I have recently grown fond of Free Web Directory. Even Slashdot can be considered a directory: a collection of great news and invaluable user-generated comments. As far as software is concerned, doing a quick search on Google about software directories will return the free (as in freedom) software directories like Savannah, SourceForge, Freshmeat and so on, followed by shareware and freeware sites such as FileBuzz, PCWin Download Center and All Freeware (great if you're looking for shareware and freeware, but definitely less comprehensive than their free-as-in-freedom counterparts).
Is better education the key to finding better software?
Sat, 2007-03-03 03:25 — Edward RusselI read David Jonathon's article Anybody Up To Writing Good Directory Software? the other day, which got me thinking about software directories in general. As David mentioned, many of the software directories one finds when doing a quick google search are free as in beer, not as in freedom. But what interests me is the software directories that already exist, providing a combination of both free as in beer software, and open source software. Sites such as Freeware Downloads and Shareware Download don't advertise themselves as providing free as in liberty software, but each of them have a good selection of open source software available... if you know where to look.

Analyzing an entire website just because it supports an opinion that doesn't please you..?
What kinda schizophrenia are you suffering from exactly?

Like, far out!
Yeah, Kletskous used to hang out with that schizoid chuckle-head called Sir Sane/Mr Fruitloop, or some such rot, remember him?
Roy certainly attracts some interesting case-studies over there.
Hey Kletskous, the doctor said you had to keep taking the medication every day. Don't forget what happened last time.

Relax
Relax; I just posted the story here and I don't know the writer, nor SirSane or any of the Fruitloops family. To me it is just a funny insight in the time Mr Schestowitz spends on his crusade; it is amazing!

Sorry
I'd always mistook you for one of his group-therapy circle.
I just tried to get back into the site to see if maybe they let him out and he'd started a new site, when Firefox froze up and I had to reboot, then my ISP went down for a while.
I think I'll leave that site to its own devices.

No probs
Yeah, well you were always voting against Boycott Novell at exactly the same time as he'd organised a circle of his fanboys, or himself, to do the same, so I just assumed you were one of them, or one of him.

You don't fight FUD by spreading FUD
Well if that is so, that is accidental. I value my indepence. And I think Boycott Novell incidently has an interesting story, but most of the time I see it as trying to create a big hype about nothing, repeating the same stuff over and over again and self-promotion by linking to it's own old stories all the time, in stead of to the original bringers of the news and that is why I stopped taking it serious and reading the blog. As I see it, Boycott Novell does more harm than good to free software, but at the same time I still don't like and trust Mono and support the ideas of Richard Stallman.
Anyway; you don't fight FUD by spreading FUD!

I see it differently
If Boycott Novell repeats the same theme over and over, it's because M$ is doing exactly the same thing, over and over.
They never stop and they never vary the theme all that much.
I'd be prepared to bet that Ballmer dreams of dirty deeds for Free Software, even when he's asleep.
With all this continuous plotting against us it's advisable to keep a continual record of what these cruds are up to and Roy fills that need very well.
Yes, Roy does refer back to his own articles in a wiki-style fashion, but if you dig a bit you can get back to the original stories. I've done this and submitted them here as separate posts on a number of occasions.

It is the law...
Ok understand and thanks for explaining. Personally, I see Microsoft as a dead end street, not worth paying too much attention to, but on the same time staying aware of their movements that could harm free software. But that they can do that is caused by laws created by our own governments that give companies like MS the opportunity for abuse, so I think it would be better to focus on that. Because it is us who choose our governments and give them power.

M$-Corruption
Yeah, we elect them, then they sell us out every time.
The US got rid of Bush and they got Obama. We got rid of Howard and we got Rudd.
Obama appointed an ex-Microsofti to a top administration position, while Rudd buys all the M$ he can lay his hands on and co-operates with M$ favourite, ACTA, in Korea.
M$ buys all these politicians as soon as they land in office.

Agree
I agree; so that issues we should pay attention too in stead of concentrating on the effects.. And that goes way further than just MS.
